What Is a Split HVAC System?

A split HVAC system is a heating and cooling setup with two main components: an outdoor unit and an indoor unit, connected by refrigerant lines and electrical wiring. It’s called “split” because those two halves live in separate locations and work together to move heat into or out of your home.

This is different from a packaged system, where all the components are housed in a single unit (usually on the roof or a concrete slab beside the house). Packaged systems are more common in smaller homes, commercial buildings, and regions with less attic or closet space. In most U.S. houses, though, the split system is the standard.

The Two Parts of a Split System

The Outdoor Unit

The outdoor unit is the large metal cabinet sitting beside or behind your house. Depending on your setup, it’s either a condenser (for air conditioning) or a heat pump (which can both heat and cool).

This is where the compressor lives, and the compressor is the heart of the whole system. It pumps refrigerant through the lines that run between the outdoor and indoor units. In summer, that refrigerant carries heat out of your home and releases it outside, which is how your house gets cooler.

Heat Pump Split System

Instead of a separate AC and furnace, a heat pump handles both heating and cooling by reversing the direction it moves heat. In summer it pulls heat out of your home; in winter it pulls heat from the outside air and brings it in. Heat pumps are popular in milder climates and are increasingly common as an energy-efficient option.

Ductless Mini-Split

A ductless mini-split is a split system without the ductwork. An outdoor unit connects to one or more wall-mounted indoor units, each cooling or heating a specific room or zone. These are great for home additions, garages, sunrooms, or older homes that never had ducts installed.

How a Split System Heats and Cools Your Home

The magic happens through the refrigerant cycle. The compressor in the outdoor unit pressurizes refrigerant and pumps it through the system. As the refrigerant changes between liquid and gas, it absorbs heat in one location and releases it in another.

In cooling mode, the system absorbs heat from the air inside your home and dumps it outside. In heating mode (with a heat pump or furnace), it does the reverse, or generates heat directly through combustion or electric resistance. The indoor blower then pushes that conditioned air through your ducts and into your living spaces.

How Do I Know What Kind of System I Have?

The quickest way to tell: look outside. If you have a large metal unit beside your home and a separate indoor unit (a furnace or air handler in a closet, attic, or garage), you have a split system. If all your equipment is contained in one big cabinet on the roof or a slab, it’s a packaged system. And if you have individual wall-mounted units in specific rooms with a small outdoor unit, that’s a ductless mini-split.
