Mini-splits are awesome. Lots of homes in Europe and Asia use them, simply because of lack of space. Here in the U.S., we’ve got big attics where we can store lots of stuff, but mini-splits are great for smaller spaces.

Mini-split systems are completely ductless. You’ll have a little box outside, which is your outdoor unit. If you’ve traveled, maybe you’ve seen them in hotels underneath windows. You would have something similar, but instead of underneath the window, you would have it at the top of a wall.

Basically, you control the unit with a remote control. You turn it on and off to heat and cool your house. What’s really awesome about them is that they are super quiet and efficient. You definitely need a professional to install it, but the return on investment is amazing.

Think of a mini-split like a light dimmer. Instead of a light switch that is either on or off, you can actually customize the energy usage. So sometimes you might only be running at 60%, saving you money in the long-run.

Mini-splits are perfect if you’re converting your garage into a gym or mother-in-law suite, or anywhere else you want to add heating or cooling. The installation only takes 2-4 hours, so you don’t have to take the whole day off of work. And it’s not only going to be a smaller investment than a full system, but it’s also going to save you money long-term.
