Think of SEER ratings on your air conditioner like miles per gallon for your car. The higher number, the better.

SEER stands for seasonal energy efficiency ratio. The higher the number, the more efficient the unit is. No one wants to pay more in utilities each month. An air conditioner with a high SEER rating will save you money over time.

When it comes to shopping for a new system, the SEER rating is totally up to you. If you’re planning on staying in your home for a while, it might be a good idea to invest in something with a higher SEER rating, so you save money in the long run. But if you’re planning to move in a year or two, you may want to buy something less efficient and save upfront.

The minimum SEER rating that you can get today is 14-SEER and they go up to 20-plus. We typically see homeowners investing between 16 and 18-SEER.
